Falling Film Diagram

  • Feed Inlet: This is where the liquid feed enters the evaporator. The liquid usually contains a mixture of solvent and solute.
  • Distribution Plate: The feed is evenly distributed over the internal surface of the evaporator’s heating tubes using a distribution plate. This ensures the formation of a thin, even film of liquid that flows downward.
  • Heat Exchange Tubes: These vertical tubes are the primary site for evaporation. Heat is applied to the outer surface of the tubes, causing the solvent in the thin film of liquid to evaporate as it flows downward.
  • Heating Medium Inlet: This is where the heating fluid (often steam) enters to provide the necessary thermal energy for evaporation.
  • Heating Medium Outlet: The heating medium exits the evaporator after transferring heat to the liquid film.
  • Vapor Separator: The vaporized solvent separates from the concentrated liquid (residue). The vapor is directed upwards, while the remaining concentrated solution flows downward.
  • Vapor Outlet: The separated vapor is collected and removed from the system. Depending on the process requirements, it can then be condensed.
  • Concentrated Liquid Outlet: The concentrated liquid (or residue) is collected at the bottom of the evaporator and removed from the system for further processing or disposal.
  • Liquid/Vapor Separation Area: This region efficiently separates the vapor and the liquid, ensuring that only the vapor exits through the vapor outlet.
